Prerequisites

You are responsible for ensuring you satisfy eligibility prerequisites prior to applying for any of UOIT’s Additional Qualification (AQ)/Additional Basic Qualification (ABQ) courses. Please check the Ontario College of Teachers’ (OCT) Public Register to see your status/qualifications for approved acceptance into an AQ or ABQ program. Only official university transcripts will be accepted.  Official Transcripts are to be sent to:

Admission requirements:

Primary and Junior Basic Qualification Courses

Prerequisites:

  • Must be registered with the OCT or hold an interim Certificate of Qualification.  

Note: Exceptions and any additional requirements are noted with each course.  

Intermediate Basic Qualification Courses

Prerequisites:

  • Must be registered with the OCT or hold an interim Certificate of Qualification; and
  • Official transcripts showing proof of successful completion of a minimum of two full university degree credit courses or the equivalent in the teaching subject.

Note: Exceptions and any additional requirements are noted with each course. 

Senior Basic Qualification Courses

Prerequisites:

  • Must be registered with the OCT or hold an interim Certificate of Qualification;
  • Official transcripts showing proof of successful completion of at least a minimum of two full university degree credit courses or the equivalent in the subject; and
  • Some courses (such as Science-Biology) require successful completion of more than two full university degree credit courses or the equivalent in the subject. For example, Science-Biology, requires five full university degree credit courses in the subject area only.

Note: Exceptions and any additional requirements are noted with each course. 

 *Section 31 of Ontario College of Teachers Regulation 184/97 states that any member applying to take a Schedule A (Additional Basic Qualification) course must hold an acceptable post-secondary degree.

One-session Qualification Courses 

Prerequisites:

  • Must be registered with the OCT or hold an interim Certificate of Qualification.

Three-session Qualification Courses 

Notes:

  • Exceptions and additional requirements are noted under the specific course descriptions; and
  • Part 1 courses do not lead to a divisional entry on the Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification. See Primary, Junior/Intermediate, and Senior Basic Qualifications.

Prerequisites for Part 1:

  • Must be registered with the OCT or hold an interim Certificate of Qualification.

Evidence of basic qualifications in one of: the Primary Division, the Junior Division, the Intermediate Division or the Senior Division in general studies.

Prerequisites for Part 2:

Evidence of the completion of Part 1 as shown on your Certificate of Qualification. Please provide a copy of your OCT Certificate to the AQ Office.

  • Evidence of at least one year of successful teaching experience in Ontario certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer or proof of at least one year of successful teaching experience outside Ontario. The appropriate Supervisory Officer must certify this experience on the Certificate of Teaching Experience Form. 

Prerequisites for Part 3: 

  • Evidence of the completion of Part 1 and Part 2 as shown on your Certificate of Qualification. Please provide a copy of your OCT Certificate to the AQ Office; and
  • Evidence of at least two years of successful teaching experience, including one year of experience in Ontario in the subject in which the qualification is being sought. The appropriate Supervisory Officer must certify this experience on the Certificate of Teaching Experience Form.

Please note that for Part 2 and Part 3 courses, you must have an appropriate Supervisory Officer certify that you have the required length of successful teaching experience subsequent to your Ontario Teachers' Certification.

Supervisory Officers:

  • For a teacher employed by a District School Board of Education, this person is a Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the District. A Principal's signature does not satisfy this requirement; and
  • For a teacher employed by a private school, this person is the Ministry of Education official appointed to provide supervisory services for the school. A Principal's signature does not satisfy this requirement.
