Research Interests
Dr.vanOostveen
's major research interests lie in the use of technology and its assistance in learning, the use of action research as a mechanism for the professional development of teachers, and the use of video cases in teacher training and development. He is also concerned with the status of epistemology in student's and teacher's minds when learning and teaching are considered. Through the use of video-based cases combined with problem-based learning tasks, he explores mechanisms which may lead to new methods for professional development and learning. Current projects
Dr. van Oostveen is currently working on a number of projects including: Tablet PC use by UOIT Faculty of Science students, Video-based Case Study development andanalysis in Science, Math and Technology Education, Problem-Based Learning Object development and analysis, Action Research as professional development in higher education and Knowledge Building opportunities using wiki's and other Web 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 applications. There are a number of goals for these projects. The integration of technology projects are focused on an evaluation of the efficacy of these systems and applications in the support of teaching and learning strategies. The major part f his work centers on professional development opportunities that have traditionally been carried out in face-to-face meetings. He is concerned about the possibility of moving these opportunities into virtual environments and determining the efficacy of this shift and characterizing the affordances that must be present to meet the needs of the learners.
